A Great Grilled Steak Menu for Father’s Day

Make Kevin Gillespie's Grilled Flat Iron Steak the main dish at your Father's Day cookout.

This Father’s Day, treat Dad to an afternoon of bonding over hot coals and sizzling meat — you may even be able to teach him a thing or two with these grill-master tips from Kevin Gillespie. Add a menu full of great cookout sides and a decadent chocolatey sweet, and the perfect dad date is complete. Now go get grilling!

Follow Kevin’s lead to grill the perfect steak. Kevin likes using flat iron steak because it has nice marbling, it’s flavorful and it’s less expensive than more traditional cuts. He uses a simple marinade, adds salt and pepper and throws the steak onto a super-hot grill, just like the best steakhouses.

For a different take on steak, see Mark Bittman’s tips, spice-rub ideas and marinade recipe.

With grilled steak, you can’t go wrong with potato salad. Kelsey’s Herby Potato Salad With Warm Bacon Vinaigrette hits all the right Father’s Day notes — fresh and tangy with smoky bacon flavor. Or, if Dad likes something more creamy and traditional, mix up a bowl full of Kevin’s Classic Southern Potato Salad or Tyler’s ultimate Potato Salad.

Kelsey's easy potato salad is full of flavor from fresh herbs, tangy vinegar and smoky bacon.

Next, pick a few more summer salads, like Cherry Tomatoes With Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing, Spicy Pickled Cucumbers, Grilled Corn Salsa and Quick Coleslaw. Don’t be afraid to try a few new ones to mix up your normal summer cookout routine. If Dad’s adventurous and likes spice, you could even go for dishes with an Indian twist, like the Spice Goddess’ Indian Potato Salad or Zucchini Paneer.

What’s the best cocktail for Dad? Try a refreshing Tea Breeze, Southern sweet tea with a shot of Kentucky Bourbon, or browse all of our summer drink recipes.

Dress up Dad's normal iced tea with a little mint, peach schnapps and bourbon.

And for dessert, think chocolate. Cool down with Nigella’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge Sundaes or end the meal with a toasty dessert on the grill like these Grilled Banana S’mores.
