Mira Sorvino is an Oscar-winning actress (she took the prize for best supporting actress for her role in the 1995 movie, Mighty Aphrodite); you may also remember her as Romy, from Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. Her father, actor Paul Sorvino is most recognizable from his role as Paulie Cicero in Goodfellas (you know, the guy who slices garlic with a razor blade). In 2006, Paul was diagnosed with diabetes. He immediately gained the support of his family as he changed his lifestyle and began eating healthier foods and exercising. Paul and Mira work together in the kitchen, on the dance floor and on the diabetes lifestyle site DiabetesCostars.com to help Paul and millions of other Americans cope with diabetes.
Food is central to the Sorvino’s lives (Paul even has his own line of pasta sauce and other Italian goods) and Paul’s diagnosis didn’t change that. Eating together as a family, especially during the holidays, is as important to the Sorvino’s as ever, though the food they eat is healthier than before. For the holiday season, Mira developed a one-bowl gingerbread cookie recipe that retains all of the spicy-sweet flavor of this holiday favorite, but without the use of synthetic artificial sugar.
