Cookbook Giveaway: The Pioneer Woman Cooks

The Pioneer Woman's Strawberry Shortcake Cake combines all the deliciousness of classic strawberry shortcake into one cake and wraps it all in cream cheese frosting.

Everyone’s favorite accidental country girl, Ree Drummond, started the blog ThePioneerWoman.com in 2006, sharing stories of ranch life in Oklahoma, amazing photographs of food and family, and, of course, irresistible cowboy- and kid-approved recipes. Her first cookbook, The Pioneer Woman Cooks, was a #1 New York Times best-seller, and last year she became a Food Network star with her cooking show, The Pioneer Woman.

Ree’s second cookbook, The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Food From My Frontier, focuses on simple, delicious food. She includes more than 100 recipes, covering every meal of the day with beautiful step-by-step photos for no-fail results. As you dive into her homey recipes, like cowgirl quiche, homemade glazed donuts, fried chicken tacos and more, prepare to be transported by Ree’s pictures and prose to a world of truck driving, cattle ranching, horse riding and good eating. This is one cookbook everyone, city slickers and country folk alike, will enjoy reading and using.

Give a few of Ree’s down-home recipes a try today:
Drip Beef Sandwich
Rigatoni and Meatballs
Strawberry Shortcake Cake

Ree slow cooks a chuck roast and then serves it on deli rolls, letting the meaty juice soak into the rolls for amazing flavor.

The first thing to pop into my head for a country home cooked dish would have to be a herb roasted chicken atop of hearty root vegetables. With shiny pan dripping gravy.

  22. Cheryl Raiken posted 03/30/2012

My Favorite down home country food is all beef chili, no beans. I like to roast a variety of dried chills to make a flavorful paste, and add just onion, garlic, lean cubed beef, chili paste, cumin. I like beans on the side and it's great topped with some fresh avocado, chopped tomato and onion with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese. With some cornbread on the side it's a perfect homey meal.

My favorite down-home food has to be gravy and biscuits! I was raised pretty poor, so it was a prevalent dish in our diet. I remember at times it was our entire meal several times in a lean week , during one such meal, my older brother looked at Mom and said, "Mama… do you realize all you have fed us this week is bread and water?" To which she answered, "Then it won't come as a surprise if you're ever in prison… Eat."
