Thirsty Thursday: When Vodka Gets Weird

By: Roberto Ferdman
Peanut Butter and Jelly Vodka

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

When I heard that Van Gogh Vodka was launching a peanut butter and jelly-flavored vodka, I was surprised to find out that, well, I wasn't really surprised at all. The concept alone should have been cringe-worthy, but I barely flinched, even with a description like this:

"While the fragrance is predominantly of peanuts, it is complemented by the fresh fruit aroma of the raspberry.  On the tongue, the roles are reversed and the raspberry flavor is more of the focal point, giving it a velvety texture with a hint of vanilla on the side."

Why wasn't I surprised? Because sipping on spiked PB & J doesn't sound as strange when you consider that marshmallow, cookie dough and whipped cream-flavored vodkas already exist. On the current trajectory, I wouldn't even be surprised if the whole cupcake craze found its way into a... wait, that already happened? Sounds like it's about time we surveyed the further reaches of today's flavored vodka landscape. Below, our top 5 outrageous finds.

1. Cupcake Vodka

Their slogan encourages you to Live Deliciously, and if you're doing it the cupcake vodka way, you'll have three options: chiffon, frosting and devil's food.

2. Peanut Butter Vodka

Why include its infamous sandwich counterpart when you can sip on something that tastes " like the center of a peanut butter cup."

Taste It Yourself: NutLiquor
 3. Bacon Vodka
Bacon, oh bacon. You've been there for the good times, and the bad. Why not join us for the party?
Taste It Yourself: Bakon Vodka (yes, they spell it like that...)
4. Tomato Vodka

OK, so we'd consider pairing it with citrus and/or cucumber, even basil or oregano, but still, of all things, this is one strange flavor infusion to settle on. You say tomato, we say you've got to be kidding me.

Taste It Yourself: Three Olives' Tomato Vodka
5. Wine Vodka

Would you like some cheese with that wine? How about some vodka? Why don't we just mix the two up? Leave it to vodka behemoth Absolut.

Taste It Yourself: Absolut Tune
