Cookbook Giveaway: The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook

Use fresh summer peaches to make this Peach Crumb Coffee Cake from The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook.

A simple cast-iron skillet is one of my favorite kitchen tools, mainly because it can be used with very high heat and retains that heat so amazingly. It’s ideal for searing steaks (one of Alton’s favorite uses) and baking cornbread.

I’m always on the lookout for new ways to put this pan to work, and The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook doesn’t disappoint. It includes recipes for, yes, cornbread, but also soups and stews, main dishes, side dishes and desserts, with a whole chapter devoted to outdoor cooking. Whether you’re cooking over a campfire or having a backyard barbecue, nothing sets the “rustic cookout” mood better than a summery side dish or dessert served in cast iron.

Pineapple-Infused Rum

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Bright and brimming with tangy, sweet pineapple, this is the boozy weapon your summer bar has been waiting for. Keep a pitcher of this pineapple-infused rum in stock, and turn impromptu imbibing into a classier (and tastier) affair. We’re a fan of mixing in a splash of club soda and tart lime wedge, but tonic, coke, sprite or juice all work just as well.

Bottoms up, folks.

Twice as Nice: Happy 2nd Birthday, Cooking Channel!

Cue the candles and the bubbly pairing for that barbecueCooking Channel turns 2 this weekend. Ready yourself; here come the proud-mama clichés: So big, so fast! So young still, but so smart! It seems like just yesterday we were brand-new on air and just a wee blog online. As much as maturing, we’re still by Food People for Food People.

Remember that first blog post? Okay, you prolly don’t (again that parental pride). Anyhow, as we launched, Cooking Channel General Manager Michael Smith touted our game plan: “Together we’re going to find more ways to explore food and cooking, including the unconventional, how-to, global cuisines, wines and spirits, international travel, history and hidden gems, and even some classic favorites.” Over a couple dozen months we’ve been spinning the globe and peeking and poking and pondering and powering our way from cook to cook, cuisine by cuisine, city by city. We’re becoming the food destination to watch, finding what to eat and drink here on our site, on Facebook, on Twitter and on Pinterest and discovering the best of what to watch, whether it’s on television or with fun (and funny) original series here on our site—Trend Alert, anyone? Fodder for thought…

Stay tuned for even more hot shows this summer.

Thirsty Thursday: Coney Island Iced Tea

Coney Island Iced Tea

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Long Island Iced Teas aren’t for the faint of heart. They aren’t for the faint of liver, either. Unless, that is, they come as masterfully balanced as Michael Chiarello’s. Starting with the usual suspects — light rum, vodka, gin, tequila and soda — Michael’s Coney Island Iced Tea rounds off each sip with sweet orange liqueur, tart lemon juice and fresh mint. Calling it refreshing would be a terrible understatement. Pour a glassful and you’ll see, before giving in to the temptation to have another.

Tea time just got pushed back a few hours, and for good reason.

Bottoms up, folks.

Sifted: Momofuku Milk Bar Goodies and Memorial Day Favorites

Mini Crack Pie by Butter

5 Hot Links We’re Loving:

  1. Butter transforms Momofuku Milk Bar’s infamous crack pie into cute mini pies. If you haven’t heard of crack pie, look it up and try some asap!
  2. Need a crowd-pleasing side dish for Memorial Day festivities this weekend? Cook Like A Champion’s French potato salad ditches the mayo and lightens up the cookout classic with a tasty fresh herb vinaigrette.
  3. More Milk Bar: We’re daydreaming about Scarletta Bakes batch of cornflake cookies. The crunch from the cereal and the gooeyness of the marshmallow makes for an irresistible treat.
  4. Whisked‘s recipe for lemon poppy seed shortbread is a bright and bold version of the buttery cookie.  It’s a perfect snack for tea-time snack, or anytime of the day we’re going to be honest.
  5. Looking for an excuse to make mac ‘n cheese? Fuss Free Cooking adds the superfood kale to her stove-top recipe, so go ahead and indulge.
