Cookbook Giveaway: The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook

Use fresh summer peaches to make this Peach Crumb Coffee Cake from The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook.

A simple cast-iron skillet is one of my favorite kitchen tools, mainly because it can be used with very high heat and retains that heat so amazingly. It’s ideal for searing steaks (one of Alton’s favorite uses) and baking cornbread.

I’m always on the lookout for new ways to put this pan to work, and The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook doesn’t disappoint. It includes recipes for, yes, cornbread, but also soups and stews, main dishes, side dishes and desserts, with a whole chapter devoted to outdoor cooking. Whether you’re cooking over a campfire or having a backyard barbecue, nothing sets the “rustic cookout” mood better than a summery side dish or dessert served in cast iron.

I just got back from a vacation to the island of Kauai, HI. I stayed in a condo, I brought with me my favorite knife, some dry spices, and my favorite Lodge cast iron skillet! Condos supply some basics, but as long as I have my favorite cast iron skillet I'm set. Wether it's fried fish on an open fire at the beach, fried teriyaki steak or chicken at the condo for dinner I can do it all with cast iron. Our favorite is a frittata for breakfast or lunch made from farm fresh eggs infused with last nights leftovers or fresh herbs and island fare from the local farmers markets, the harbor or the local meat market. My Lodge Cast Iron Skillet I don't leave home without it, especially when I'm heading to paradise!

My favorite thing to make and serve in a cast iron "frying pan" is a pineapple upside-down cake. I think this should be our top ten things…or at least our favorite meals…fried green tomatoes to start, fried chicken/smothered chicken, then the upside-down cake to top it off. Then there is apple fritters, a treat from my camping days. I often wished there were a "cast iron cookbook".recipes just for making in cast iron cookware, it holds the heat better, and I don't have a mom or grandma to learn from.

I love the way my Lodge cast iron deep skillet bakes cornbread with a crunchy crust. I wouldn't even consider baking it in anything else. I would really love the cookbook…I just bought the small and medium skillet, the griddle and grill pan and I'm tossing my other cookware.

What doesn't taste wonderful cooked in cast Iron? That is all my grandmmothers, and mother have ever used to cook any and every thing in all my life and all I have ever used in all my own 45 + years of cooking. You want me to name my favorite food cooked in cast iron and that is impossible because it all comes out great. Of course nothing beats Southern Fried Chicken, Fried Catfish, Fried Okra, Cornbread, Chili, Beef Stew, any cobbler but especially peach, and don't forget the Chicken & Dumplins. Doesn't matter if it is done on your stovetop, in your oven, on a grill, or a campfire. You can always count on your dish being perfect and tasting great. LIke I said what doesn't taste better cooked in cast iron skillets and/or Dutch ovens?

  37. Joan posted 06/04/2012

I use my cast iron for almost everything. I guess if I had to choose a favorite it would have to be corn bread or biscuits since those just wouldn't be the same made any other way. Cast iron pans are handed down in my family and are treasures ment to be used.

Fried chicken. My Mom's recipe is the best. Simple but the reason it is so good is the cast iron skillet!!! You can not get the skin browned and crispy using any other pan.
