You may want to reconsider how you advertise your events. The Cooking Channel Summer Eats event is a great concept and idea to spread the word of the newer channel. I am a huge fan of the Cooking Channel and when I heard about the event, I let my friends know way in advance and we all looked forward to attending. I looked up to see if we needed passes, needed to register and even asked a friend who was working the event from Comcast if we needed anything prior to the event. Everything pointed towards “no! It’s free! Come on out!” so we just showed up. We were told at the door we needed to be on a guest list or VIP and general admission was not being let in until 7pm. We grabbed a drink next door and came back at 7pm only to be told we probably weren’t going to be let in at all and they were almost at capacity. We were the first ones in line for GA so basically any general public guests were not being granted access.
How can you advertise an event and not let anyone in? If this was a private party/guest list only, that would have been fine. It was just an inconvenience for people who traveled to Philadelphia for the event only to have their time wasted and to be somewhat humiliated at the door. I can see if there were hundreds of people rushing the door to come in but there were no more than 15 “general admission” people waiting like fools at the front.
I have worked in events in the past and get how these go. I felt bad for the girls at the front who had to turn people away. I understand there were VIP and non VIP tickets. I didn’t realize non VIP means you cannot get in at all. I also understand there are budgets, and if that was so, maybe charge a fee at the door for non guest list members. We gladly would have paid that. Also, if you tell someone GA gets in at a certain time, don’t take that back and say “nevermind.”
It does not look good on a network hosting these events and trying to put their name out there. It was kind of a rub in the nose “I’m better than you” feeling we all got and I now have a bad taste of the Cooking Channel.
