Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Ernest Hemingway traveled long and far in his lifetime, but only one destination drastically altered the writer’s drinking habits. Long story short, Cuba and its rum-soaked daiquiris will always hold a place in Hemingway’s liver. On a particularly parched evening, he is even reputed to have thrown back a whopping 16 of them.
It’s National Daiquiri Day, and there’s only one way to celebrate: with a Hemingway Daiquiri. Made with white rum, fresh grapefruit juice, maraschino liqueur and lime, pouring a few glasses of this refreshing favorite is only fitting. Raise a toast to the classic Caribbean cocktail with this tasty variation, mixed up by Marshall Altier of New York City’s JBird Cocktails.
Bottoms up, folks.
Ingredients:
2 oz aged white rum (e.g. Denizen)
3/4 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
1/2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
1/4 oz maraschino liqueur
Directions:
Pour all ingredients into a shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a lime wheel.
