Musical Tastes: Oktoberfest Playlist

While many will be turning up the accordion polka jams for their Oktoberfest celebrations, we thought we would treat your ears with a little more sympathy, so we dug up these fun “German”-inspired tracks for you to listen to while preparing some savory traditional recipes for your Bavarian bash.

Nico – “These Days”

Nico was a German model, actress, singer and songwriter who’s most well-known for her collaboration with the Velvet Underground, with whom she recorded the album The Velvet Underground & Nico, featuring the legendary banana cover designed by Andy Warhol.

Listen to Nico’s ghostly cover of Jackson Browne’s “These Days” while making the Potato & Beer Soup pictured above.

U2 – “Mysterious Ways – The Perfecto Mix”

Recorded in Germany, Achtung Baby‘s unique sound was inspired by the recently opened Berlin Wall, European electronica and dance music, which melded together to create a groundbreaking direction for the world’s biggest band.

Listen to this remix of U2’s “Mysterious Ways” off their Achtung Baby deluxe rereleased 2011 edition while making the Duck Meatballs With Cherry Sauce.

Wilco – “Impossible Germany”

Enjoy this thought-provoking track off of Wilco’s 2007 Sky Blue Sky while making the German-Styled Creamed Spinach. Singer Jeff Tweedy says it’s impossible, but this recipe is very simple.

Berlin – “Take My Breath Away” (Love Theme from Top Gun)

Play this classic ’80s love song while you are making the Caramelized Onion Pretzel Rolls and the subtle sweet and nutty flavors will take your breath away too. Be sure to keep an eye out for Goose and Maverick!
