As we’ve become busier in our lives, and our work on the farm and at Beekman 1802 Mercantile has kept us more “sedentary,” we rarely have time for long-distance road trips. So when we do, we take the time to indulge.
It’s like our own version of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. We are shamelessly attracted to mom-and-pop roadside culinary adventures. And if there’s authentic neon signs involved, we can’t pass it up.
On our road trip to North Carolina we happened upon Wright’s Dairy Rite as we were passing through Staunton, VA. It was your standard drive-thru fair: hamburgers, hotdogs and an assortment of other salty and fried deliciousness.
And there was a dessert on the menu that we simply could not pass up. The name was just too enticing: Wright’s Wheelie.
It turned out to be an ice cream sundae served over a warm, glazed doughnut.
Decadent, sinful, and perfect fuel for the remainder of the road trip.
What’s your favorite road trip indulgence?
