Fall Fest: Thanksgiving Yam and Sweet Potato Sides That Are Almost Desserts

Sometimes on Thanksgiving, after taking a bite of that traditional pecan- and marshmallow-studded Sweet Potato Casserole, I wonder, “Is this really a side dish, or a dessert?”  If you’d like an excuse to squeeze in another sweet dish but don’t have room on your dessert spread (what with the must-have pumpkin and pecan pies), the flavor profile of sweet potatoes and yams often occupies that liminal space between side dish and dessert. Besides, who wouldn’t want a bit of dessert for dinner?

Here are five side dishes that get the sweet treatment:

Get the Recipe: Southern Style Candied Yams with Gingersnap Crunch (pictured above)

These sweet-and-sticky candied yams are roasted in a spiced syrup before getting a unique crunchy topping from gingersnap cookies.

Get the Recipe: Whipped Sweet Potatoes and Bananas with Honey

This casserole may look traditional, but it gets an extra oomph of natural sweetness from roasted bananas and honey.

Get the Recipe: Yams with Toasted Spice Rub

Roast these yams with brown sugar and a combination of savory spices, including chili powder and coriander.

Get the Recipe: Sweet Potato Souffle

This puffed and golden Thanksgiving soufflé gets a savory, salty kick from crumbled bacon in the brown sugar-pecan topping.

Get the Recipe: Chipotle Sweet Potato Spoon Bread

The sweetness of the potatoes marries well with the smoky flavor of chipotle pepper and adobo sauce.
