How to Put Together a Hobbit Menu

There is only one way to get ready for the premiere of The Hobbit this weekend: Host a marathon viewing session of The Lord of the Rings. And in order to sustain the energy required for the 11+ hour viewing party (extended edition, of course), it’s essential to embrace the day and Eat Like a Hobbit. Hobbits prefer six meals a day, seven if they can get it, and  I say, why not? Just be sure if your guest list is at 13 that you find a 14th guest.

Now let’s get started:

Breakfast: Scones and Jam

The Unexpected Party at the beginning of The Hobbit is rich with food ideas: “A big jug of coffee had just been set in the hearth, the seed-cakes were gone, and the dwarves were starting on a round of buttered scones.”

There’s varying opinions on how to make seed-cakes, but scones are easy enough. Serve Alton Brown’s scone recipe with raspberry jam for another nod to the book. Set out meats and cheeses as well for continued munching throughout the day.

Second Breakfast: Grilled Strawberry Shortcake With Lemon Cream

When Pippin and Merry begin to grumble about the chances of Aragorn knowing about second breakfast is exactly the time to serve it. Go for Kelsey’s Grilled Strawberry Shortcake and hopefully you’ll remember the taste of strawberries come the third movie.

Elevenses: Lembas Bread

As your journey continues into The Two Towers, I advise pausing to consume homemade Lembas bread. A quick Google search for “lembas bread recipe” turns up several options, but I recommend our sister site Food.com’s lembas bread recipe.

Luncheon: Fish and Chips

Though Gollum wouldn’t approve, a serving of “lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish” should suit everyone’s lunchtime needs just fine.

Afternoon Tea: Honey Cakes

Any fan of The Hobbit will remember Beorn, the shape-shifter who could turn into a large black bear. It should come as no surprise, then, that the food he provided Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves involved honey. What better way to start the movie fest than with Honey Cakes? As they are almost as filling as Lembas, the meal should get you through to supper. I recommend also serving coffee or mimosas at this point, as it’s said that honey cakes can make one thirsty.

Dinner/Supper: Pork Pies

It’s important to remember what this viewing party is about, so let’s end the meal with another throwback to the The Hobbit. During the Unexpected Party, the dwarf Bombur calls for pork pie. Serve with a salad, for balanced eating.

What else would you serve at your Hobbit/Lord of the Rings party?

An alternate (though significantly less authentic) game plan  would be a quick trip to Denny’s for their Hobbit-themed menu.

But what about MUSHROOMS!! How could you get through the journey without some of Farmer Maggott's Mushrooms???!!

Here's the recipe from the cookbook I made for my daughters:

    Magic Mushrooms
    (aka Farmer Maggott’s Hobbit Mushrooms)

    Yield: (not enough!) 6-8 servings
    Ingredients:

1/2 pound cold (or frozen) bacon
    1 large onion, finely minced
    4 tablespoons butter
    2 pounds fresh white mushrooms
    1 heaping tablespoon minced garlic
    1/2 cup soy sauce
    1/3 cup sugar

    Directions:

1.Wash and trim mushrooms. This is the worst part, because you have to be careful to get all the little bits of dirt off from around each mushrooms. Use cold water and wipe them with a paper towel if the dirt won’t come off by rinsing. Trim the ends of the caps off and any bruised or dark areas.
2.Cut bacon into small diced pieces. This is a lot easier to do if the bacon is still partially frozen (it won’t slide around as much), but a really sharp knife is the real secret.
3.Fry diced bacon over medium heat in a big pot, stirring occasionally until bacon is well-browned and crisp. Be patient; it’ll take time for the bacon to completely brown.
4.Pour off almost (but not all) of the fat (save in a jar to make cornbread if you want).
5.Add butter and minced onion and sauté until onion is limp and transparent.
6.Add garlic and mushrooms and cover pot. Stir every minute or so to make sure all the mushrooms are making it down to the onion and butter.
7.Mix soy sauce and sugar together. When all the mushrooms have been coated with the butter mixture, add the sauce and stir to distribute thoroughly. Continue to cook just until mushrooms are tender. They’re going to shrink a lot. Remove from heat and keep covered until time to serve. They’ll shrink and darken the longer they have to sit, so try to do this as close to serving time as possible.

And you are not suppoe to wash mushrooms in water – just brush them off.. just an FYI

"Than" is used when comparing 2 objects. " It should come as no surprise, than, that the food he provided Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves involved honey." should use "then." Professional writers should be grammar and spelling experts.

Oh, this was so much fun to read! When I first got out of college ( a thousand years ago) I used to have hobbit dinner parties. I had some pewter plates and goblets that I used. I even started a cookbook ( I still have the notes) that my son and his friends say I should finish. I will probably try all of these recipes! It is good to know there are others out there with like minds!
