Comfort Feast: Unexpected but Delicious Pizza Toppings

From a classic homemade dough to calorie-saving pita crust, the possibilities for your homemade pizza are endless. Alton Brown’s Pizza Pizzas (pictured above) call for a dough that must rest for 18 to 24 hours but if you’ve got to immediately satisfy a pizza craving and you want to skip store-bought dough, stop by your local pizzeria. Chances are they’ll sell you a homemade dough for a fraction of what you might pay for a full pizza. Then head home to top it with some of these delicious (and unique) toppings:

1. Brunch Pizza

Craving breakfast-for-dinner and a pizza? Alie and Georgia’s solution is a sauce-topped dough with tomatoes, cheese and a freshly cracked egg.

2. Bobby’s Southwestern-Style Pizza

Bobby Flay starts with whole-wheat dough to make a lighter but still incredibly filling pizza. Saute beef with onions, peppers and tomatoes to create a meaty sauce and spread it onto the dough. Top with a Mexican-cheese blend before baking until bubbly.

3. New Haven-Style White Clam Pizza

Get inspired by Connecticut’s signature pizza. Start with a thin, crispy crust, and is top it with garlic, oregano, olive oil and just a touch of cheese.

4. White Pizza

Debi Mazar and Gabriele Corcos, hosts of Extra Virgin, skip sauce in favor of mozzarella, prosciutto and arugula. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

5. Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza

A cast-iron skillet and super hot oven are essential to making this Chicago food staple. Layer sausage on the bottom (to ensure a crisp crust) followed by mozzarella and marinara. Top with garlic, oregano and Parmesan before drizzling with olive oil.

 6. Double Cheese Pita Pizza

Okay so it’s not pizza dough but this healthy alternative is still smothered with mozzarella cheese and some tasty toppings. Start with whole-wheat pitas then top with sauteed turkey sausage and spinach for a healthful but still comfort food-friendly alternative to classic pizza.
