The splendid pageantry of Super Bowl Sunday is nearly upon us. It’s the one day of the year where we are encouraged, nay required, to eat as many chicken wings as humanly possible. Luckily, these wings are plentiful. It’s not as if anything could get in the way of placing dozens and dozens of wings in our gaping maws right? You may want to sit down before you continue reading this.

According to the National Chicken Council, we are in the midst of a bona fide wing shortage. This is due to a number of factors, but the council mostly lays the blame on rising corn prices. Corn is the main ingredient in chicken feed and, well, you can figure out the rest. All told the council says we could be staring down a wing shortage to the tune of 12.3 million delectable, blue cheese-drenched wings.

All is not lost, however. Some are saying the council’s study is full of hot air, and corn prices will go back to normal as soon as so much of it stops being used for ethanol production. In the meantime, watch this related video and cross your fingers that we aren’t forced to eat only carrots and celery this Sunday.
