Chrissy Teigen on Romantic Cooking, Eating Whatever You Want and More

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

Food fanatic, swimsuit model and avid blogger Chrissy Teigen and husband-to-be John Legend will embark on their wedding menu tasting adventure on Chrissy Teigen’s Hungry, premiering on Wednesday, February 13, on Cooking Channel. On the special, Chrissy heads to Blackberry Farm resort, set in the scenic Smoky Mountain foothills, to sample rugged yet refined fare, from braised beef short ribs to slow-simmered blackberry jam. Along the way Chrissy will forge friendships with resident sheep, roll around in mud, and hunt ingredients for breakfast. Your average wedding preparation? Never. This is over-the-top, delicious, chaotic and, above all else, totally Chrissy.

In our interview, Chrissy shared with us her wedding planning tips and take aways from cooking school — plus let us know how she seemingly eats whatever she wants and still manages to be a knockout in a bikini.

What’s the most important lesson you learned about planning a wedding menu?

It is definitely important that no matter how much you love, love, love love hearty food, you want your guests to be enjoying themselves more than anything! Smaller bites to start are a must, and a light, fruity dessert after the meal is a great option– people love a big burst of flavor and you won’t see them overly full, curled up in the corner of your wedding reception underneath a plant at 7:30pm.

What’s the most valuable thing you learned in cooking school?

Megan, wonderful, hilarious Megan would always tell me that there are a million ways to skin a cat. Walking in, it was really important to me that I was doing everything RIGHT, doing everything perfectly. Holding my knife perfectly, chopping beautifully, making a perfect-looking plate were consuming me and actually preventing me from the fun and experimental aspect of cooking! Everywhere I looked, chefs were doing things their own way. Some chopped at an angle, while some straight on with their feet strictly planted. Some chopped quickly, some sooooo slowly. Plates are actually more beautiful and have more character when you don’t actively try put little things back into its “spot”. Another huge thing: have fun and experiment! I can’t tell you how many times Sue said to me, “let’s try it!” after I made some weird little suggestion.

What’s the most romantic thing someone could cook someone else for Valentine’s Day?

Pasta and a little (a lot) of red wine just screams love times. Ooooh something creamy like fettucini with prosciutto and peas with some minestrone that has been sitting on the stove all day. That tastes like love to me.

What would you want to eat for your last meal ever?

Definitely my mom’s scalloped potatoes with ham and bacon, which seem impossible to write a recipe for. She just does it. Every time she gives me the recipe, mine doesn’t taste the same. I’m almost sure she is doing it on purpose so her potatoes can never be replaced…

Can you offer any tips for people to eat whatever they want and still look amazing in a swimsuit?

Ha! That is the golden question isn’t it. You can’t. You just can’t eat anything you want and get in that swimsuit and feel happy. I don’t talk about it much because I HATE DIETING, I hate dieting so, so much I can barely explain without getting angry, but I don’t walk onto the set of a swimsuit shoot without having that whole week prior being a pretty strict regimen. It’s kind of insane to think that a lot of people live their entire lives eating healthily. I give major props to them! But me, I need to eat and love what I’m eating and feel full and happy. So I have those times, and I have times of really buckling down. But I try to make sure I still get the flavors I love in the buckle-down times, that way my mind doesn’t drive me bonkers. I just try to never forget that I WILL eat a hearty bowl of pasta again or that steak will be mine in a week, etc. I always throw myself a little food-I-missed party after a shoot. Whether anyone else is there or not.

Tune in to Chrissy Teigen’s Hungry on Wednesday, February 13, at 10pm ET on Cooking Channel.
