Disney’s March 8 release of Oz: The Great and Powerful has me conflicted. On one hand, I can’t help but be sucked into the technicolor grandeur of the trailer, in which a tuxedo-clad James Franco is sent to the land of Oz to defeat the Wicked Witch. On the other hand, what new spin on the classic — that made Dorothy’s red slippers and Margaret Hamilton’s cackle immediately recognizable — could possibly out-do Wicked, the uber-musical centering around the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West? Unless James Franco turns green, belts a high F and flies through the air, this movie has its work cut out for it.
Nevertheless, as is the case with any movie that features flying monkeys, I’m interested — particularly as a perfect excuse to pair with-a-twist cocktails with the classic icons of Oz.
To start things off, this cocktail is sweet, light and a little bit dangerous — just like Glinda. Try this Glinda-inspired punch that will flirt and wink its way into your heart, and then knock you out with a Bourbon kick. Nice one, Glinda.
Not to be outdone, the Wicked Witch has a cocktail with the intense color of her famous fireball. This potent Witches’ Brew Punch of flavor featuring Malibu Coconut Rum. Warning: do NOT add water.
As an homage to the ruby slippers, we’re including this Ruby Red Grapefruit Margarita. Make this margarita, close your eyes, take three sips and say, “There’s no place like the beach” … or something like that.
Finally, this Drunkie Monkey Dessert isn’t exactly a cocktail, but rather a spiked banana rum pudding in a dark chocolate shell. What did you expect Finley the Flying Monkey to eat? I wonder if flying monkeys are better at sharing than the non-flying kind.
