Let Kix Brooks Show You How to Make the Perfect Steak

There are two things that Kix Brooks has major expertise in: country music and great steaks. Before you get to grilling this summer, consult him for at  least one of them — and follow his tried-and-true steak-cooking tips — though he probably has a killer soundtrack for your backyard BBQ, too.

Whether it's the basics of picking the right meat to start with, like a great T-bone, or achieving the perfect char once it hits the flames, Kix has you covered. Check out a few of his tricks below, and get his whole  guide to cooking the perfect steak here.

Have Grate Prep for Your Grill

Once your grill is cleaned, be sure to oil it up so your steaks don't stick. After that, all you have to do is oil and season your steaks with salt, pepper and any other spices before cooking them off.

Kix is all about turning up the heat and charring over big flames. One of his favorite tips comes from Cattlemen's Steak House in Fort Worth, Texas: "If you're cooking with real charcoal, take a ketchup dispenser and fill it with vegetable oil. Squirt some vegetable oil on the charcoals. It'll flame up all over that steak and put a nice char on it. Don't forget to get your hand out of the way, no matter how much fun you're having!"

Slow-Cook It to Perfection

Once a perfect crust is achieved, Kix says to move it to a cooler spot on the grill to slow-cook for 15 to 20 minutes. "It's easy to just cook over that hot fire, but the steak will be tough and you won't like it," he explains. And once that steak is cooked to perfection, remember to let it rest, or else you'll end up with a dry, tough steak.
