Looking for a quick, meatless weeknight meal that isn’t PB&J? Of course you are. As temperatures outside decrease, our desire for warm, comforting foods increases. But time spent in the kitchen and waistlines needn’t increase as well. Spice Goddess Bal Arneson’s Cauliflower With Sweet Potatoes is a quick, healthy Indian main dish that will warm you up and fill you up. It’s perfectly spiced without being spicy (though heat-lovers might choose to saute some jalapenos along with the onions in the recipe), and if you can manage to save any, the leftovers are great for lunch the next day, or for breakfast served alongside a fried egg.

Lentils are high in protein and fiber and are one of the best vegetable sources of iron out there. They’re popular in India, the Mediterranean, Pakistan and the Middle East, and are easily found in any neighborhood grocery store in the United States. Lentils are also inexpensive, so a great pantry item for families to stock up on. But once your pantry is full, will your kids eat these little legumes? Maybe.

Labor Day has come and gone, and crisp fall weather’s right around the corner. Summer barbecues are winding down, but it’s too soon for quintessential fall foods like squash and pumpkin. So what’s on the menu for Indian Summer?

Bal Arneson is sneaking in in one last outdoor picnic. Today on Spice Goddess, she puts together an Indian picnic spread with spiced-up dishes like Sirloin Skewers with Roasted Potatoes and Rice Pudding.

In celebration of Summer Fest: pepper week, I decided I’d like to pick a peck of peppers, Peter Piper-style. But my peck would be a virtual one, a peck of the best peppers on the web. To do this, I’d first need to figure out what a peck is. Some quick research proved to me that a peck is a customary unit of dry volume, equivalent to 2 gallons, 8 dry quarts, or 16 dry pints.  (And 4 pecks make a bushel.) Turns out that a measure of dry volume doesn’t translate as well online as I’d hoped, but in the spirit of a peck, I’ll pick 8 of my favorite pepper recipes out there — one for each gallon. Try to top that, Peter Piper.

I love having a CSA. Every week, my farmer delivers fresh-picked tomatoes, peaches, herbs and as many squash as I can carry. But then, there’s the okra situation. For the last month, my CSA box has included a big bag of okra. “I hope you’re not tired of okra,” my farmer says each week.  I vaguely smile.  I’m not tired of okra — I’m stumped by it.
