Immersion Blender: We make a lot of soups, many of which need to be pureed. Transferring the mixture to a food processor is not only messy, but can be dangerous if the mixture is still hot. An immersion blender takes care of both of those problems.
Lemons, Lemons, Lemons: We make sure we’re never out of lemons. We use the zest to garnish and brighten the flavor of all sorts of dishes. If we don’t need the juice right away, we freeze it in ice cube trays. And we don’t even throw away the juiced carcass; we use them with salt as an easy way to keep our copper polished.

By far, the most common question we get asked is whether Josh is able to be on the farm full time yet.
The answer to that is … no.
Like many entrepreneurs, we were grossly delusional when estimating how quickly the business would grow.
Even when calculating in the capital investments in starting a farm or the ongoing recession, we never considered that our “year of sacrifice” would stretch into five.
The health center project that was supposed to happen in Sharon Springs unfortunately never materialized, so Josh continues to work in the city. We continue to work towards the goal of our “rural reunion” and get closer every single day.
So for all of you who wonder what has happened since we left you at the end of Season 2 of The Fabulous Beekman Boys
, life goes on.
But you haven’t missed that much (yet).
To say that our first employee, Maria, is a fan of the Victorian era is a bit of an understatement. Her email address includes the phrase “veryvictorianlady,” and for a time in her life, she penned and performed Victorian murder mysteries on an upstate N.Y. tourist train. If you happen to be wearing a high-necked blouse with lace on it, she is your immediate best friend.
She has been the driving force behind the Sharon Springs Victorian Celebration that the village hosts on the first Saturday of every December.
The only thing that she doesn’t like about the Victorian era is the food.

How old is that carrot you just ate? No, not the actual carrot — its genes. In the last decade or so, Americans have come to value heirloom varieties of vegetables, especially tomatoes. But for us at The Beekman, calling something “heirloom” is just the tip of the iceberg (lettuce, introduced in 1894).
After all, for those of us who collect antiques, we’re not satisfied merely calling something “heirloom” or “antique.” We don’t just collect “old plates” — we collect Flow Blue dishware, or Depression glass, or Mercury glass. We tend to learn everything possible about our historic treasures. Ask anyone who collects vintage automobiles about their “old cars” and you will likely wind up spending the rest of the day hearing every little detail about them.

When we started the Harvest Festival and Harvest Feast in our tiny village of Sharon Springs, NY, four years ago, our goal was to engage the community in the support of the local farmers and food producers and perhaps introduce a few “outsiders” to the rich agricultural history of Schoharie County, “the breadbasket of the American Revolution.” That first year 500 people came — and we were thrilled (there’s only a little over 500 people in the entire village).
This year’s Harvest Festival was Sept. 15 and 16 and more than 10,000 people from 22 states and four countries passed through Sharon Springs. It is testament to what a small community can achieve when it works together toward a common goal.
The dates for next year’s festival are Sept. 21 and 22, so start making plans now!

Without a doubt, Polka Spot was the break-out star of Season 1 of The Fabulous Beekman Boys. She quickly amassed thousands of Facebook and Twitter followers.
It went straight to her head.
Soon her desire for wanderlust and world domination became too much for the confines of her fenced in portion of the pasture.
For several weeks, we would mysteriously find Polka Spot wandering around various part of the farm. We surveyed all areas of the fence to find a hole where she might be escaping, and with none found, we were at a loss as to how to keep her safe and limit the amount of “llama drama” on the farm.

The teams for the new season of The Amazing Race have been announced and it turns out two of the 22 around-the-world racers are Cooking Channel’s own Fabulous Beekman Boys, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge. Given their background, we think they have a pretty good shot at the million dollar prize. Learning to run a 200-year-old farm, raise a herd of goats, launch a lifestyle business and maintain a healthy relationship is probably as good of a prep for an intense global competition than anything.
