Thirsty Thursday: Basil Berry Cocktail

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

As soon as birds chirp and flowers bloom, the scent of spring is in the air. With a huge sigh of relief, we can throw open a window and enjoy the gentle breeze, preferably with a cocktail in hand. Pop open a bottle of chilled, fizzy lambrusco for this Basil Berry Cocktail that mimics spring’s crisp and refreshing air.

This spring-centric cocktail is comprised of muddled fresh basil and strawberries topped with a bit of bubbly. The herbaceous and fruity notes in this cocktail reminds us of the warmer days to come.

Bottoms up, folks!

Thirsty Thursday: Wine Fruit Spritzers

Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. We might need to detox from all the rich holiday food, but who says we can’t stick to our New Year’s resolutions and also enjoy a cocktail with a weekend winter brunch? After all, winter is full of seasonal fruits, so it’s time to start using fresh juices to brighten things up and give us a break from heavy winter meals.

These Wine Fruit Spritzers will give you a chance to mix and match wine with fruit juices and tasty, seasonal garnishes. Start with a crisp Sauvignon Blanc and pair with your juice of choice, such as pink grapefruit, blood orange or pomegranate. Top this tipple with club soda to soften the sweetness, and garnish with fresh fruit. It’s an entirely refreshing brunch beverage that won’t leave you feeling guilty.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Earl Grey Spritzer

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Tea time meets happy hour in this mild and well-balanced Earl Grey Spritzer. Naturally light and refreshing, this cocktail isn’t ready to give up on the still-warm summer air even as it slowly fades into autumn.

Start by steeping Earl Grey tea bags in homemade simple syrup and allow the mild bitterness of the tea to be fully infused in the sweet mixture. Then spoon this Early Grey simple syrup into tall glasses and top with chilled Champagne or sparkling wine. Cool, crisp and bubbly, this is the kind of cocktail we image you to have at a brunch fit for a queen.

Bottoms up, folks.

How to Make the Perfect Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary

It doesn’t need to be brunch time for me to enjoy a delicious and spicy Bloody Mary. So when I heard that  Astor Center was having a Create the Perfect Bloody Mary class, I immediately signed up. The class, taught by father-and-son team Jeffery and Jonathan Pogash, featured a whole host of bloody options to try while Jeffery (author of the forthcoming book entitled Bloody Mary, $40) took the class through the history of the iconic brunch drink, which more than one person over the years has claimed to have created. While we listened we sampled a Bloody Mary (vodka-based), a Bloody Maria (tequila-based) and a Bloody Scot (scotch-based).
