Party in Five: Neon Birthday Party

We here at Cooking Channel love a good party. But throwing a memorable event requires more than just gathering some food and drinks. We show you how with just five main “ingredients” (including recipes, big-impact decorating ideas and easy DIY elements) you can throw a party that feels like it has a cohesive theme — minimal work required.

When we’re adults, birthdays come and go – often uncelebrated or with little fanfare – so when a milestone year approaches, it feels all the more special and worthy of a full-blown fete. In honor of a friend who recently turned the big 3-0 – and Cooking Channel, which turns 3 years old, today! – I planned a party that’s made for adults but is filled with the whimsy and excitement typically reserved for children’s parties. Utilizing a neutral background and metallic accents, I chose a neon color palette for an on-trend feel, but I’ll show you below how this party can be adapted to any color palette of your choosing.

To host your own neon birthday party, you’ll need five essential ingredients:
• colorful confetti
• printable do-it-yourself invitations (download the template here)
• homemade classic party hats
• extra-long and numeric birthday candles
• cupcakes with neon icing

Party in Five: Football Game-Day Party

There’s nothing like getting a group together for a game-watching party — the entertainment’s a no-brainer, the food is hassle-free and the guests arrive ready to have a good time. This year, I hosted a big-game party for a group of fellow fans, and after a bit of planning, the day came together in a way that was both stylish and sporty. The food centered around a build-your-own-chili bar with details in our home-team colors, and in addition to the game playing on a big screen, I set out some fun activities and more than enough beer.

Party in Five: Holiday Cocktail Party

We show you how with just five main “ingredients” (including recipes, big-impact decorating ideas and easy DIY elements) you can throw a party that feels like it has a cohesive theme — minimal work required.

There’s no doubt about it: My favorite thing about the month of December is the flurry of cocktail parties that take over my social calendar. Although I’m usually one to host more casual, laid-back get-togethers, the holidays just seem to call for a bit more glitz, so I’ve decided to celebrate the season with a super festive cocktail party in shades of glamorous gold and vibrant jewel tones. While this party may not look carefree, planning it is much simpler than you’d think. With classic globe ornaments, gold confetti and a handful of DIY projects, this shindig is cost-effective and can be pulled together in a flash.

Party in Five: Wintry Cookie Swap

The holidays are all about spending quality time with friends and family, so I love hosting a fun and festive gathering that allows me enjoy their company — not spend an entire day preparing for the event.  This year I decided to host a simple, old-fashioned cookie swap, reimagined to feel like a cozy mountain ski lodge. With an abundance of plaid and both vintage and handmade details, it sets the stage for mugs full of hot beverages and indulgent sweets. The best part about this party concept, though, is that everyone brings their own batch of homemade cookies for potluck-style eats, and by sending printable recipe cards along with the invitation, you’ll have favors ready for everyone (that they’ll actually use).

Party in Five: Hawaiian Luau

In the summertime, entertaining needs to be easy — so you have more time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the warm-weather eats. We set out to create fun, complete party experiences using only five essential ingredients, from tasty food and drinks to decor and games. Party on!

With summer’s days waning and the temperatures continuing to rise, I’m itching to get in some last outdoor parties — but with a light menu and minimal effort required. To satisfy this entertaining urge, I decided to embrace a classic theme — a Hawaiian luau — and give it a bit of a sophisticated twist. Sure, there’s room for a paper parasol or two, but this affair is all about a clean color palette, natural materials and a light, fresh menu. With Polynesian- and tiki-inspired elements and an island music soundtrack, we felt transported to Hawaii as we toasted and feasted late into the night.

One of my absolute favorite ways to spend a summer evening is grilling pizzas in the backyard with my husband. It’s a fun, interactive way to enjoy cooking together, and the end result is so delicious. Recently we invited a few friends to join in on our tradition — letting everyone know that they’d be expected to participate in the cooking process. I set a simple, rustic table filled with fresh seasonal ingredients and woodsy elements for my farmhouse-inspired fete.

Here in Texas, we eat a lot of Mexican food; Tacos, enchiladas and guacamole are such a staple on my dinner table that they practically constitute their own food group. So when the outdoor temps heat up, I love to make these favorites feel a little more festive by throwing a south-of-the-border fiesta complete with frosty margaritas, colorful maracas and a candy-filled piñata. I recently celebrated summer’s arrival with such a fête in my backyard, and jazzed up my normal outdoor setup with vibrant flowers, a spicy menu and décor that channeled a Mexican beach town.

The increasingly hotter temps and slower pace of summer here in Austin has encouraged me to take an even more laid-back approach to entertaining than usual. So when Cooking Channel asked me to come up with fun summer parties that could be executed using only five essential “ingredients,” I jumped at the chance to tackle this challenge. The first subject of my party-throwing prowess? A beer-tasting party: summer’s toned-down version of a more traditional wine tasting event.

Family, Friends and Heartwarming Comfort Food

When planning the same holiday year after year, how do you keep your celebration fresh and interesting while maintaining a sense of tradition? We asked our favorite bloggers and food people to share what’s inspiring their Thanksgiving planning this year. From ancestor’s recipes and falling leaves, to beautiful piles of ingredients and thoughtful home decor, there was no shortage of imagination. See what motivates some of the most creative minds we know, and then start planning your annual feast.

For me, Thanksgiving is all about focusing on what really matters: family, friends and the most heartwarming comfort food. I’m designing this year’s table with a color palette of warm gold, natural wood and touches of deep teal. Instead of fussing over fancy floral arrangements, we’ll gather around a table adorned with seasonal fruits, pumpkins and branches. The best part is, most of the materials can be found in my own backyard. I’ll add votives and taper candles to make the dining room glow, setting the perfect backdrop as we give thanks for our blessings and enjoy autumn’s finest flavors. I’ll greet guests at the door with steaming cups of apple cider, and we’ll curl up in front of the fire and catch up on life as the turkey finishes cooking. I’ll add a special touch to the table with gilded place cards bearing each guest’s name; after all, a strategically organized seating chart can certainly make for a peaceful family gathering.
