Thirsty Thursday: The Mint Julep Margarita

Mint Julep Margarita

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

This Saturday marks the sweet and alcoholic intersection of two of our favorite spirit-soaked holidays: Cinco de Mayo and Derby Day. While double-fisting with a margarita in one hand and mint julep in the other would do just fine, why not join the two into a single, sinful glass? Made with bourbon, orange liqueur, mint, sugar and lime, the Mint Julep Margarita goes as well with a fancy hat as it does with fresh guacamole and chips.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Peepin’ It Real Cocktail

Peepin' It Real Cocktail

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Bright blue, wonderfully sweet and yet, magically, still potent enough to counter long, grueling week days and weekend boredom alike, Alie and Georgia‘s Peep-inspired cocktail is a sip to behold. Think of it as a warm, sugary trip down memory-lane, except absinthe-kissed and shamelessly lit on fire (yes, actually). While kids scamper around in search of candy-filled eggs this Easter weekend, bring the peeps out to party with a tasty treat, cleverly dubbed the Peepin’ It Real Cocktail.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: The Tipsy Pig Cocktail

The Tipsy Pig Cocktail

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Ice cream, cookies and candied popcorn are tempting on their own, but sprinkle a pinch of salt over the top or, better yet, stir in crispy, salt-laden bacon and suddenly each mouthful is made all the more crave-worthy. Chocolate chip bacon cookies — check. Candied bacon ice cream — check. Bacon chocolates, peanut butter, banana and bacon cookiesbacon, rum and caramel salted popcorn balls — check, check, check. These are merely a few delicious ideas plucked from the ever-growing world of sweet and salty concoctions made with bacon.

While the killer combination may have already achieved celebrity status  — bacon-infused desserts have been the rage for quite some time now — leave it to cocktail extraordinaires Alie and Georgia to anticipate pork belly’s next, dangerously-addictive venture. With 3 parts smoky bourbon, 1 part dry vermouth and 1 part glorious bacon and brown sugar simple syrup, The Tipsy Pig takes bacon out for a drink, but does it subtly and seamlessly. Balance is the key to this unique cocktail, coming through even in its garnish — a single, sweet maraschino cherry, paired with a piece of candied bacon.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Relax with a Gin Fizz

Gin Fizz

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Building off the defining features of a classic fizz — acidic juice and carbonated water —  Michael Symon makes a cocktail that’s as refreshing as it is majestic. Lemon and lime juice, along with orange flower water infuse each sip with a citrus-sparked tang, while hints of vanilla extract help keep the acid in check. What really sets this exotic sip over the edge, though, is the inclusion of egg whites and half and half, leaving each mouthful silky smooth as it goes down.

Celebrate the onset of warmer weather and longer days with Michael’s unique Gin Fizz.

Bottoms up, folks.

The Best Irish Beer Picks For St. Paddy’s Day

Beer Expert's Irish Beer Picks

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

It’s that time of year again, when leprechauns linger around shiny pots of gold and four leaf clovers find their way onto green hats, plastic necklaces and Irish insignias around the country. Whether celebrating St. Paddy’s Day means hitting the streets or hanging out at home this year, having a beer (or three) is a must, and making it an Irish-style brew is always encouraged. But while Guinness has long reigned king of creamy stouts, Irish beers go well beyond the dark Dublin classic, and some of the best bottles come from brewers you may not have heard of.

We caught up with restaurant beer director and Irish beer enthusiast Greg Engert, who shared a few of his favorite Irish-style sips. From traditional dry stouts to off-the-beaten-path ales, say hello to St. Paddy’s Day imbibing with a pint of something new.

Bottoms up, folks.

Pairing Wines with Takeout Favorites

Wines to Pair with Take Out

Foie gras and French dessert wines might make for wonderful duos, but when’s the last time you had either outside of a fancy restaurant? The problem with most wine pairings is their inaccessibility — the wines tend to be too expensive for casual consuming, and the foods aren’t exactly ones eaten regularly. What would be really helpful is knowing how to pair wine with foods eaten more casually — like, say, takeout favorites.

The wine gurus at Lot 18, an online wine marketplace, held an informal and refreshingly accessible wine pairing event for their favorite takeout foods. Held not at an uppity restaurant or sprawling estate, but at a long wooden table in a meeting room at their offices in Manhattan, the laid-back affair put forth a handful of interesting and useful recommendations:

Thirsty Thursday: A Beer and a Ball

A Beer and A Ball Cocktail

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too.

Last week we shared a recipe for a Brown Butter Old Fashioned; this week we’re back and tipping our caps to the upcoming Super Bowl with a refreshing beer-based sip.

Throwing back a few cold ones is great and all, but pouring them over ice, along with grapefruit juice, Italian aperitifs and simple syrup instead? Now we’re talking. We call it the Beer and a Ball Cocktail, but don’t be surprised if you end up gravitating towards names like highly addictive and dangerously good. Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Brown Butter Old Fashioned Cocktail

Brown Butter Old Fashioned

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too.

Last week we shared a recipe for Alie and Georgia’s quirky-cool Drunken Donuts Cocktail; this week we’re back with something a bit more traditional.

Dating all the way back to the early 1880s, the Old Fashioned has become such a classic cocktail it’s even inspired the creation of a corresponding Old Fashioned glass. Centered around smoky bourbon, bitters and an aromatic citrus rind, its orange-kissed hue exudes elegance.

Building off the cocktail’s classy base, this recipe includes brown butter-infused bourbon and maraschino liqueur, a duo of delicious flavors that work beautifully with the bitters and citrus. But be warned: once you’ve sipped on the Brown Butter Old Fashioned, drinking any other variant may never prove as satisfying. Bottoms up, folks.
