Alie & Georgia’s Guide to Super Bowl Drinks

Whether you’ve got money riding on the office pool or you’re just tuning in for Bruno Mars, the Super Bowl is — let’s admit it — a national holiday. It’s the one day a year that we are all united in entertainment and brought together by the power of nachos.

While you may be staring a veritable melted-cheese bonanza in the face (find all manner of Super Bowl party foods here), don’t forget to hydrate! It’s a long day, so keep plenty of water on hand for yourself and guests, and leave room for cocktails. Below are some of our beverage recipes to match your Super Bowl moods and to tackle that thirst.

I’m So Pumped

Okay, so you’re pumped. You’re wearing a [insert sportball team name] jersey and have gotten up early to watch all the red carpet coverage, or whatever they do before Super Bowls. Sweet. Good for you. Get this morning kicked off right by slipping into your lucky sweatpants and mixing up some brunchy drinks that will get the party officially started. Such as:

The Beefy Tomato (pictured above)

A beef jerky-infused whole-blended-tomato Bloody Maria. It would be a serious fumble to pass this one up.

Thirsty Thursday: Spicy Bloody Bull Cocktail

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Whether it’s hot wings or spicy chili, you can’t go wrong with zesty, sinus-clearing foods for the Super Bowl. Add some zippy, homemade cocktails to your Big Game spread this year as well. With the Red Hot Chili Peppers as the halftime entertainment, it only seems fitting to make a Bloody Bull Cocktail, a beer-based beverage topped with a spicy, red-hot tomato juice.

To begin, whirl tomato juice, jalapeno, horseradish, lemon juice and garlic together in a blender. Then rim pre-chilled glasses with a toasted fennel spice rub, and pour your favorite beer into each glass. Top with the spicy tomato mixture and stir.

This zesty, jalapeno-kissed beverage may pack a punch, but it goes down easy.

Bottoms up, folks!

Incorporate Seasonal Flavors into Cocktails at Home

Holiday cocktail party season is officially upon us, and we at Cooking Channel couldn’t be more excited about the plentiful libations to come. But by your 5th or 6th ugly sweater party, you might find yourself a little nogged-out on ‘nog or mulling over tossing that mulled cider down the sink. To get some inspiration for mixing up our best seasonal cocktails throughout the holidays, we sat down with Theo Lieberman, head bartender at New York City’s esteemed cocktail destination Milk and Honey. Theo loves incorporating seasonal flavors into his drinks – like in his Pomegranate Moonrise Cocktail (below) – and here he shares with us his favorite ways to shake up your signature party cocktail.

Alie & Georgia’s Holiday Cocktails and Treats

Winter has just started to peek its adorably mild head around town here in Los Angeles, and that means it’s the time of the year when everyone drives terribly and stays inside as much as possible to avoid the 60 degree light rain. And what goes better with weather-induced agoraphobia than a nice, strong cocktail or plate of comfort food in the form of dessert?

Since there’s nothing we love better than a seasonal cocktail and something sweet to accompany it, we’ve created quite a few holiday-time treats that’ll make winter hibernation not just tolerable, but delicious as well.

The Chosen Wine

With one of us being Jewish, and the other wishing she was (we’ll let you guess which is which), we’re always annoyed with how few Hanukkah-specific cocktails there are this time of year, especially when compared to the overabundance of Christmas libations and treats. The Chosen Wine cocktail solves that problem, and tastes great to boot! L’chaim!

Bourbon Cider Sipper

This deceptively simple recipe is bursting with warming winter flavors like brown sugar, clove simple syrup, hard apple cider and everyone’s favorite cold-weather warmer, bourbon.

Thirsty Thursday: Apple Toddy

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Our post-Halloween palates tend to crave something comforting, warming and delicately spiced as the holiday season rolls in and the weather grows increasingly nippy. This Apple Toddy is the perfect accompaniment to chilly winter nights and serves as a delicious reminder of seasonal pleasures.

While a traditional hot toddy involves whiskey and warm spices, this cider-based version gets a boozy boost from brandy. Simmer together apple cider, orange wedges studded with cloves, and cinnamon sticks. Ladle the steaming beverage into mugs along with a shot of brandy, and top with a luxurious dollop of fresh whipped cream.

Bottoms up, folks.

5 Awesome Halloween Cocktails

It’s a spooktacular time of year — around a shadowy corner, in a moonlit orchard or down a leaf-littered path in the dark, a spirit might overtake you! Or you could just sit at home and have a spirit overtake you via a boozy beverage. Might we suggest one of these five creepy libations? They’re eerie and mysterious and sure to send icy chills to your bones, particularly if you spill them down your pants. Don’t do that. But drink up and happy, happy Halloween.

Thirsty Thursday: A Beer and a Ball Cocktail

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Since Oktoberfest means there’s no point in drinking anything except beer, let’s raise a glass (ahem, a beer stein) to this beer-based sipper that will help us celebrate the drinking traditions of Germany. This Beer and a Ball cocktail offers some refreshment and variety, but it will also help you hold onto the traditional values of this beer-filled holiday season.

Start by muddling sage and grapefruit together, and add Campari, Aperol and a touch of simple syrup to round out the bittersweet flavors. Splash some pale lager into the mixture, and garnish the glass with a fragrant wedge of grapefruit. Sage-kissed and touched with sweetness, all you’ll need with this cocktail is a soft pretzel and a sausage to celebrate Oktoberfest in style.

Bottoms up, folks!

P.S. This cocktail would also make a great addition to your next football party spread.

Thirsty Thursday: Two-toned Tequila Sangria

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Let me introduce you to a cocktail so stunning and delicious, it should probably be nominated as the official boozy beverage of summer. If you love sangria (and who doesn’t love sangria?), then you’ll find this amped-up, two-toned Tequila Sangria truly refreshing. This pioneering cocktail has all the flavors that make up red wine sangria, but it gets an extra oomph from tequila and sweet elderflower liqueur.

Let’s think about what that means for a moment: pineapple juice, tequila and elderflower liqueur (alternatively, you could try this with ginger or peach liqueur) make up the tasty base of this summery sipper. Then add a hodgepodge of tropical fruits and seasonal berries and top with bold Rioja. The deep purple of the Rioja against the backdrop of bright yellow pineapple juice will give you a dramatic-looking cocktail that subtly changes with each sip.

Bottoms up, folks.

The Food-Focused Bride: Cocktails, Wine and Beer

I am getting married in 81 days. Yes, the countdown is on. And while I’ve been slowly trying (albeit unsuccessfully) to phase alcohol out of my wedding diet, I’m certainly looking forward to all of the options on the big day.

First, the signature cocktail. As I’m not a fan of naming my drink after myself, my fiance or my marriage, we’ll just be serving Sangria. Since stone fruit will be in season around Sept. 7, I’m going to serve a modified version of a traditional White Sangria (pictured above), adding in peaches and plums, if they are available. I suppose I could call it Wedding White Sangria, but it would taste exactly the same.
