Thirsty Thursday: Gin and Cranberry Sauced

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Let’s talk about cranberry sauce for a moment. It’s the wonderful sauce that anoints turkey. It’s the ruby-hued, sweet relish that adds texture, color and diversity to the holiday plate. It’s an excuse to have a little something sweet for dinner. For those who could consume a bowl of cranberry sauce like it’s a bowl of cereal, here’s a boozy way to get your fix.

For this Gin and Cranberry Sauced cocktail, add gin, lime juice, bitters and, of course, some cranberry sauce to a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously with ice and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Float a sprig of rosemary on top, and the opulent fragrance will make you think of Christmas. It’s hard to go wrong with these well-balanced sweet, tart and herbal flavors.

Bottoms up, folks!

Mini White Chocolate, Cranberry + Pumpkin Cookies

Visit our All-Star Cookie Swap, then head over to FoodNetwork.com for great takes on holiday baking from Food Network chefs.

When trying to decide what cookie we’d contribute to Cooking Channel’s cookie swap, we were inspired by all of those (somewhat scary) scented candles and potpourri that seem to pop up around the holidays. Lets be serious — they are way too strong and basically give everyone migraines. What those products are trying to emulate is the subtly spicy scent that wafts through the air while holiday baking is underway. And so we created these pumpkin cookies, to capture all that seasonal goodness (nary a wax candle in sight).

To replicate those sweet, spicy and tart smells in the form of a cookie, we started with a pumpkin base and studded the dough with bits of white chocolate and dried cranberries. (Pumpkin is one of our favorite wintry flavors and we bake with it as much as possible during its short season.) The result?  These super soft, fluffy cookies with alternating bits of creamy and chewy textures. We promise: Baking these cookies will remind you what the holidays really should smell like.

Fall Cranberry Harvest: Nantucket’s Most Delicious Season

It's cranberry season!

As the days get shorter and the night gets nippier, there is one berry we still can’t get enough of: the cranberry. On Nantucket, a tiny island off the coast of Cape Cod, millions of cranberries are harvested every fall.  While Nantucket might be known best for its busy summer beach season, the fall is our favorite time of year on Nantucket.

That’s when the tourists disperse, and the bushes (or “moors,” to the locals) that blanket the island turn shades of autumnal brown and red.

Braised Veal Sweetbreads With Tomatoes and Fennel

Braise today, grill tomorrow -- cook the last of your favorite winter foods.

Oh, winter, with your gray days, cold temps and snow drifts. I may wax poetic for picture-perfect snow storms when the oppressive August heat arrives, but right now I’m so ready to move on to warmer and greener things. My pantry, however, is still stuck in depths-of-winter mode. Is yours still prepped for the next ice storm? This week, bring it into the light by using up the last of all those winter remnants.
