The fast food breakfast sandwich, in all its reincarnations — may it be made on bread, an English muffin, a croissant or a biscuit — has been around for decades, but in today’s world of marketing gimmicks, fast-food spots are figuring out new ways to stand out from the crowd. Sure, many chains offer eggs, cheese, bacon and/or sausages inside a breakfast burrito these days, but what can a fast food chain do to go beyond that? Plenty, as we’ve discovered.

Here in America, thanks to the nefarious work of Morgan Spurlock and others, we have begun expecting our fast food joints to be kinda, well, healthy. Most of them now serve veggie burgers, salads and even cups of fibrous material that scientists call fruit. In Japan, however, that is not the case. Japanese fast food restaurants still embrace the unhealthiness in all of its deep-fried glory. Case in point? McDonald’s and their new French fry size.
McDonald’s Japan has just unveiled something they are calling the “Mega Potato.” This massive container holds so many French fries, diners will think they have died and gone to deep-fried heaven. Don’t eat the whole thing in one sitting, or you might actually die (and go to deep-fried heaven). It holds enough French fries to make up two large-size American portions.
This Mega Potato will set you back 490 yen, or $4.80. Considering two large fries at your local McDonald’s costs around $6, it is quite a steal!
St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and that can mean only one thing. Drinking to excess. OK, it can mean only two things. Drinking to excess and green food. Chain restaurants have long been a fan of the holiday, using it to unveil all manner of themed menu items. Flip through our gallery of some of our favorites throughout the years.

It’s been almost a full year since the folks at Taco Bell teamed up with snackmaker Frito-Lay to bring what many hailed to be the crowning achievement in junk food: Doritos Locos Tacos, with the filling of a regular Taco Bell taco spooned inside a crunchy shell made of Nacho Cheese Doritos. Plenty of market research went into this product, and the end result, not surprisingly, was exactly as I described — all placed inside a branded, red-cardboard sleeve that ingeniously prevented the sticky flavor dust of Doritos from making your fingers all orange.
Of course, fast food aficionados rejoiced at this collaboration of two junk food giants, while those who prefer cooking with fresh ingredients winced at the state of humanity. However, the former prevailed in mainstream popularity, and in response, the two companies have teamed up again to give their fans exactly what they’ve wanted: Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos.

Spring: It’s usually a time that reminds us that bathing suit season is just around the corner. Wendy’s is taking a different approach. They recently introduced three new signature sides made with “premium ingredients” that go against the grain: Macaroni & Cheese, Baked Sweet Potatoes and Chili Cheese Fries. We can admit that comfort food is a year-round craving for most people, and to be fair, Wendy’s does offer several side salads, as well as apple slices on their menu.
But it was the calling for an extreme amount of melted cheese and a craving for brown sugar that had us take a field trip to a local Wendy’s to try these new items. Indulging in fast food isn’t something we’d recommend, but if you’re on the road and have to partake in a drive-through outing, we’re going to recommend you order certain items over others. Here’s how everything rated:

Use leftover risotto to fry up arancini, an addictive Italian snack.
In Rome, there’s a McDonald’s mere steps from the Spanish Steps. It’s always busy, but I can’t imagine why anyone would choose McDonald’s over authentic Italian snack food. Fast-food French fries vs. freshly-fried arancini risotto balls? That’s a no-brainer.
“Italians are experts in some of the most creative and satisfying snack foods around,” says Mario Batali, a true expert in all things Italian (and all things delicious).
