Thirsty Thursday: Sgroppino (aka A Boozy Sorbet Punch)

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Sgroppino is a traditional palate-cleansing Italian cocktail versatile enough to be served as an aperitif, with dessert or as a brunch beverage. This cocktail is a slushy mixture of prosecco, vodka and lemon sorbet, with chopped fresh mint as garnish. Flawlessly bubbly and lemony, this four-ingredient mixer’s simplicity and its bright and clean flavors make it an ideal cocktail for summer sipping.

The mixing method is simple: pour chilled prosecco and vodka into glasses, and drop a melty scoop of sweet lemon sorbet to float on top. The sorbet will slowly relax into the fizzy mixture, creating a frothy, chilly punch perfect for enjoying on hot afternoons.

Bottoms up, folks.

Living the Dream in Monte Carlo

Giada tries her hand at risky roulette in the ritzy and romantic city of Monte Carlo.

There are those cities that, when you visit them, it feels less like real life and more like you were dropped into someone’s fantasy or else the picturesque set of a romantic comedy.  Monte Carlo is definitely one of those cities. Luxurious hotels, elaborate architecture, world class restaurants, sports cars that would make James Bond drool and to top it all off, both the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea as its scenic backdrop: welcome to paradise. If you’re having trouble picturing this dazzling and dreamy destination, than join your equally classy tour-guide Giada De Laurentiis tonight at 8pm ET as she takes us along for a tour of this romantic and royal town on Giada in Paradise: Monte Carlo.

One of her first stops is the cocktail bar at the Columbus hotel. Known as the place to “see and be seen in Monaco,” this classically cool bar boasts an outstanding cocktail list, including the infamous Cocktail Grace.  Named after the beautiful and beloved actress turned princess Grace Kelly, or “Princess Grace” to those in Monaco, this drink is as feminine and elegant as its iconic namesake.  Crisp and cold champagne gets sweetened with a bit of rose jelly and aromatic rose liqueur, which give it delicate but deliberate floral notes, reminiscent of a stroll through a rose garden. And that’s just one little sip of the city.

Stir yourself up your own stylish Cocktail Grace and watch Giada (the Grace Kelly of Cooking Channel) as she paints the full picture of Monte Carlo tonight, January 20, at 8:00 pm ET, the first stop on the Giada in Paradise tour.

Top Pops: 5 Refreshing Ice Pop Recipes

Yogurt Ice Pops with Berries

With a solid month of summer left, it remains pretty steamy across most of the country. Chasing down the ice cream truck for relief will only make you sweatier, and the reward may be an artificially-flavored, unsettlingly-fluorescent frozen treat. When you make ice pops at home, the freezer handles most of the labor and you know exactly what ingredients are in them. They’re easy, refreshing and flavorful – plus no sweating required.

Here are five of our favorite recipes to stay cool:

Giada De Laurentiis Joins the Meatless Monday Movement

giada de laurentiis

Meatless Monday is a global movement, a way of life. It’s not a campaign to turn everyone in the world vegetarian or vegan; in fact, many involved are meat-lovers. Eating less meat has been proven to reduce the risk of disease, curb obesity and has important environmental impacts, too. Will you join us in giving up meat, just for one day a week?

Giada DeLaurentiis, host of Everyday Italian, cookbook author, Today Show contributor, wife and mom to 4-year-old Jade, has joined the Meatless Monday movement, preparing meatless meals in her own kitchen, and continuing to offer plenty of veggie-friendly recipes on her show and in her cookbooks.

In her latest cookbook, Weeknights With Giada, she says: “In an effort to eat healthfully and mindfully, we’ve started having Meatless Mondays in our house, which has coincided with my discovering my new favorite ingredient, quinoa. It’s got a nutter texture than rice and is higher in protein, which is great for vegetarian-friendly meals like quinoa with purple Peruvian potatoes, green peas, black olives, fresh herbs, lime juice and a little agave.”

Eat like you’re a member of Giada’s family tonight: Try the Quinoa and Purple Potato Salad Giada’s so crazy about, or one of Giada’s many meatless recipes.
