Get Our Thanksgiving Post-Turkey Coma Playlist

Thanksgiving is hectic (driving long stretches in brutal traffic, re-engaging with in-laws, dealing with screaming kids and then in many cases stopping for a 15-minute sprint to stuff ourselves silly.)

That’s why in our family, who take our music as seriously as we take our food, we try to take a deep breath, sit down and really listen. We have a post-meal Thanksgiving tradition, as we revel in our food comas: We listen to and talk about the music that inspires us to be grateful. Some of us who are more musically inclined may even perform a song on the guitar or piano. Mostly, though, we’ve just taken to bringing out our iPods and playing songs that reflect our feelings of gratitude toward each other, remembering aloud what we are thankful for and in some cases calling up favorite songs that help us enjoy even more the food coma.

I’ve put together the perfect soundtrack for the Thanksgiving “food coma.” Put this list on, chill with the family, be thankful … and pass out.

Caramel Apples – “Lost” – Coldplay & Jay-Z

Caramel Apples

Only Coldplay’s Chris Martin & foodie wife Gwyneth Paltrow could get away with naming their daughter Apple. Is it because they are crazy for Caramel Apples? I think so. Take a listen to this great track with a guest appearance by Jay-Z, and try your best not to get your hands sticky with this great recipe.

Musical Tastes: Oktoberfest Playlist

While many will be turning up the accordion polka jams for their Oktoberfest celebrations, we thought we would treat your ears with a little more sympathy, so we dug up these fun “German”-inspired tracks for you to listen to while preparing some savory traditional recipes for your Bavarian bash.

Nico – “These Days”

Nico was a German model, actress, singer and songwriter who’s most well-known for her collaboration with the Velvet Underground, with whom she recorded the album The Velvet Underground & Nico, featuring the legendary banana cover designed by Andy Warhol.

Listen to Nico’s ghostly cover of Jackson Browne’s “These Days” while making the Potato & Beer Soup pictured above.

Thirsty Thursday: Our Summer Cocktail Party Playlist

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

The essential component to any summer cocktail party isn’t the right balance between tequila and salt, but the musical ingredients that create the perfect soundtrack. We enlisted expert musical programmer Andrew Wintner of The Beat Advisory, who curates musical experiences for dozens of restaurants, bars and hotels across the country, to round up a an eclectic collection of tunes that will make your soiree a memorable one. Here’s a taste:
