Party in Five: DIY Dim Sum Party

We here at Cooking Channel love a good party. But throwing a memorable event requires more than just gathering some food and drinks. We show you how, with just five main “ingredients” (including recipes, big-impact decorating ideas and easy DIY elements), you can throw a party that feels like it has a cohesive theme — minimal work required.

Dinner parties can be a lot of work, but when you invite guests to get involved with the preparation of the meal, you can significantly reduce your party prep time (and stress). I recently hosted a Dim Sum party and welcomed a few friends into the kitchen to learn how to make Chinese dumplings. The interactive entree was the perfect focal point of a festive dinner full of modern, eye-catching Asian-inspired details. And since guests spent the evening socializing in the kitchen, I didn’t have to miss out on a single moment.

To host your own Dim Sum party, you’ll need five essential ingredients:

Party in Five: Retro-Inspired Picnic in the Park for Two

Gorgeous weather often infects people with a specific spontaneity — the impulse to cancel those dinner reservations, head to the park and soak up as many sun-filled minutes of the day as possible. I love taking a tried-and-true concept like this one and giving it a few gourmet touches. When you factor in homemade food, this picnic in the park captures a timeless American spirit. The cross-generational tradition offers a way for people to get outdoors and enjoy public spaces — and an excuse to indulge in that most classic of picnic customs, fried chicken. So locate a shady spot in your favorite neighborhood park and gather some vintage-inspired elements to host your own picnic reminiscent of summers past.

To host this retro picnic in the park, you’ll need five essential ingredients:

Party in Five: Nautical Backyard BBQ

We here at Cooking Channel love a good party. But throwing a memorable event requires more than just gathering some food and drinks. We show you how, with just five main “ingredients” (including recipes, big-impact decorating ideas and easy DIY elements), you can throw a party that feels like it has a cohesive theme — minimal work required.

Typical backyard barbecues are often simple, undecorated affairs. But when you’re going to the effort of planning a menu, a bar and maybe an array of games for your party guests, why not take the time to add some decorative touches that’ll make it feel like a themed event? No imagery is quite as evocative of summertime as nautical elements like ropes, seashells, sand, and blue and white colors. So whether you’re seaside, lounging by a lake or pool, at the park or in your own backyard, you can transform your party space into a beach-inspired retreat. The wistful touches and low-key hands-on menu will transport guests to an instant vacation.

To host this nautical backyard barbecue, you’ll need five essential ingredients:
• a build-your-own burger bar
• classic blue-and-white pinwheels
• seashells (authentic or from a party store)
• paper cones for popcorn (download the template here)
• watermelon wedges

Party in Five: Southern Comfort Father’s Day Brunch

We here at Cooking Channel love a good party. But throwing a memorable event requires more than just gathering some food and drink. We show you how with just five main “ingredients” (including recipes, big-impact decorating ideas and easy DIY elements) you can throw a party that feels like it has a cohesive theme — minimal work required.

Though our dads deserve a big bash to honor their thankless sacrifices, Father’s Day is often underserved with a simple, lackluster barbecue. This year, attempt to repay Dad with a Southern-inspired comfort food brunch that features his favorite flavors and something different than the steak-and-burgers, beer-and-sports routine. (Why should brunch — a hearty, any-time-of-day meal — be saved for the moms only?) A buffet setup keeps this party concept laid-back, while a neutral palette proves that the manliest of men can be celebrated with themed decor.

To host your own Father’s Day brunch, you’ll need five essential ingredients:
• family photos, new and old
• Bloody Marys
• printable Father’s Day cards (download the template here)
• potted succulents
• Virginia ham biscuits

Party in Five: Neon Birthday Party

We here at Cooking Channel love a good party. But throwing a memorable event requires more than just gathering some food and drinks. We show you how with just five main “ingredients” (including recipes, big-impact decorating ideas and easy DIY elements) you can throw a party that feels like it has a cohesive theme — minimal work required.

When we’re adults, birthdays come and go – often uncelebrated or with little fanfare – so when a milestone year approaches, it feels all the more special and worthy of a full-blown fete. In honor of a friend who recently turned the big 3-0 – and Cooking Channel, which turns 3 years old, today! – I planned a party that’s made for adults but is filled with the whimsy and excitement typically reserved for children’s parties. Utilizing a neutral background and metallic accents, I chose a neon color palette for an on-trend feel, but I’ll show you below how this party can be adapted to any color palette of your choosing.

To host your own neon birthday party, you’ll need five essential ingredients:
• colorful confetti
• printable do-it-yourself invitations (download the template here)
• homemade classic party hats
• extra-long and numeric birthday candles
• cupcakes with neon icing
