Portland takes food very seriously. There exists such a degree of food austerity that instead of being an award-winning comedy so good it’s starting its fifth season in January, the show Portlandia could have been a procedural drama about unfit artisanal seltzer. In Portland, if you’re going to bottle club soda in hand-etched beakers at a farmers’ market, it better be infused with organic, locally-sourced, cage-free, house-made CO2.
To celebrate the food that defines the city and the show, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein have made The Portlandia Cookbook: Cook Like a Local. With more than 50 recipes from Portland restaurants and from the show’s characters (Mr. Mayor, Kath and Dave, Peter and Nance, and more), the book would be a fine companion at an Allergy Pride Parade for any foodie, freegan, gastroethologist, foodtrucker or adult babysitter.

Bobby Flay stars as himself tonight on Portlandia‘s Brunch Special, attempting to make the perfect marionberry pancakes for Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein and show director Jonathan Krisel (pictured above). We don’t know if he’ll pull it off and, since we’ll be watching Bobby on Iron Chef America on Cooking Channel during the same time slot, we may never know*.
That’s okay though, because we do know the secret to scoring a Bobby Flay brunch any time we want — follow his recipes from Brunch @ Bobby’s and make it at home. You don’t have to wait in any lines to enjoy his easy Silver Dollar Buttermilk-Pecan Pancakes with Bourbon Butter, or his Carrot Cake Pancakes with Maple-Cream Cheese Drizzle or his thirty-minute Orange Ricotta Pancakes with Caramelized Fig and Pistachio Compote. Just top one of his pancake recipes with marionberries and you’ll be living like Fred Armisen for a meal. S’cool with us.
Check out a clip from Portlandia’s Brunch Special — a Hearts of Darkness-type documentary about the making of their season finale — after the jump.

Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein in Portlandia
Ever since the sketch comedy series Portlandia premiered on IFC last year, I can’t help it: you say “Portland,” I hear “Portlandia.”
That being said, I can’t wait to get a closer look at Portland’s incredible foodie scene this Sunday at 10PM on Unique Eats: Portland.
As we know from the myriad of (fictional?) characters that Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein play, residents of Portland are passionate about many things, with food high on the list (other interests include Feminist Bookshops, scavenging for dinner in dumpsters (aka recycling), and reading every publication ever.)
