Thirsty Thursday: A Cocktail for Snow Days

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Who said snow days can’t be fun for adults too? When you’re stuck inside from inclement weather, there’s really no better time for this Rum Hot Toddy. A warm cocktail in hand can turn a freezing-cold day into a comforting and toasty afternoon. It’s all about perspective (and booze), really.

A toddy is the perfect cold-weather beverage, and for centuries this classic cocktail has been a folk remedy for the sniffles, the flu and winter blues. While normally made with whiskey or bourbon, this version is made with rum. Simply infuse hot water and rum with lemon, honey and cinnamon for a soothing and restorative pick-me-up that is sure to keep you warm on snowy days.

Bottoms up, folks!

Thirsty Thursday: Zombie Cocktail

Halloween is one week away, which means it’s time to pick out a pumpkin, finalize the details of your costume and, of course, host a well-themed, spooky soiree.

Add some wickedness to your Halloween festivities with this post-apocalyptic Zombie Cocktail, a powerful brew of apricot brandy, three kinds of rum and orange juice. Be warned, the festive jack-o-lantern hue may seem innocent enough, but this punch is bound to wake up the undead.

Boo-ttoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Easy Rum Cocktails for Labor Day Weekend

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Weekends are important, especially the sun-dappled, backyard barbecue kinds of weekends that characterize summer. While Labor Day is the symbolic end of summer, (after this, school starts, the weather cools down and berry picking gives way to apple picking) take this extra-long weekend to relax in the warm weather with rum-filled, late-summer sippers.

We’re thinking of rum-y cocktails that pair well with sweet and sticky ribs, kabobs, grilled burgers and seasonal produce. From minty mojitos to dynamic daiquiris, rum is our spirit of choice when it comes to showcasing some refreshing flavors.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Coconut Blurry Curry Cocktail

Before you write off the idea of curry in a cocktail, just hear me out. Something rich and dreamy happens when the savory depth of green Thai curry meets sweet, silky coconut milk. When this dynamic duo gets blended with coconut rum, ice and simple syrup, it’s like a sandy Thai beach in a glass. It’s a drinkable emblem of the tropics that may have you seeing double.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Spice it up with the 5-Spice on Ice Cocktail

The holiday season evokes longings for warm spices, whether in pumpkin pie or hot mulled cider. Turn your attention to a unique way to get your spice fix: Alie and Georgia’s 5-Spice on Ice cocktail uses a blend of freshly crushed cloves, cinnamon, star anise, fennel and Sichuan peppercorns infused in a simple syrup. The cocktail also gets a kick of intricate flavors from spiced rum, Angostura bitters and a muddled kumquat. Finally the cocktail is topped with a splash of fernet, an aromatic spirit made from cardamom, chamomile and saffron. It all makes for a deeply spiced drink that will pique your taste buds.

Bottoms up, folks.

Retro Red, White & Boozy Jell-O Dessert

There’s something about Jell-O — chilled, jiggly gelatin in an array of fruity flavors and colors — that screams summertime. The easy, from-a-box dessert is perfect for hot summer days, transforming from spoonable treat to cool liquid once it hits the tongue. Set the gelatin in some shapely molds, mix in a few surprising ingredients and — voila! You’ve got yourself a perfect warm-weather party dessert with a wow factor.

To kick off my series of posts for Cooking Channel, and to celebrate July 4th, I’ve created a Jell-O mold with an elegant, adult twist (think: Jell-O shot meets dinner party dessert). Strawberries and blueberries are suspended in boozy, effervescent, ginger ale-laced gelatin, and topped with whipped cream for that full red, white and blue effect.
