Thirsty Thursday: A Drink for Margarita March

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Step into spring with a margarita before March is over, because we need to celebrate the alliteration that keeps us drinking: Margarita March. Since you can’t go wrong with a classic margarita, we’re going for Rick Bayless’ refreshing Top-of-the-Line Margarita. He ditches the sugary mix for orange liqueur and fresh lime juice to give this cocktail a well-balanced sweetness that doesn’t make you pucker. Just shake in some tequila, then pour it into cocktail glasses rimmed with flaky salt and celebrate Margarita March Madness.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Two-toned Tequila Sangria

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Let me introduce you to a cocktail so stunning and delicious, it should probably be nominated as the official boozy beverage of summer. If you love sangria (and who doesn’t love sangria?), then you’ll find this amped-up, two-toned Tequila Sangria truly refreshing. This pioneering cocktail has all the flavors that make up red wine sangria, but it gets an extra oomph from tequila and sweet elderflower liqueur.

Let’s think about what that means for a moment: pineapple juice, tequila and elderflower liqueur (alternatively, you could try this with ginger or peach liqueur) make up the tasty base of this summery sipper. Then add a hodgepodge of tropical fruits and seasonal berries and top with bold Rioja. The deep purple of the Rioja against the backdrop of bright yellow pineapple juice will give you a dramatic-looking cocktail that subtly changes with each sip.

Bottoms up, folks.

Tequila History, Facts and a Spicy Margarita

Cinco de Mayo is America’s favorite excuse to overindulge in tequila. But what do you really know about the national spirit of Mexico? I took a trip to the source to learn more.

About a 45-minute drive northwest of Guadalajara, and a couple hours inland from Puerto Vallarta, the diminutive town of Tequila sits in an arid valley at the foot of the dormant volcano of the same name. The landscape of dusky orange and yellow soil is interrupted by patchwork squares of deep blue-green fields of spiky agave plants. This is where tequila gets both its name and its character.

Thirsty Thursday: Tequila Lemonade for Spring Break

It’s quite possible that everyone’s on spring break but me. But before I get jealous of my freckle-faced friends on the beach, I can still produce a spring break-worthy cocktail!

Spring break means knocking back drinks that are refreshing and easy to make. Oh, and drinks that come decorated with those fun paper umbrellas. Even if, like me, you’re stuck in the it-almost-feels-like-spring weather, it’s easy to whip up this tequila-spiked lemonade in anticipation of warmer days.

This recipe uses Meyer lemons, which are smaller and sweeter than standard lemons. Freshly juice the Meyer lemons and add fresh mint, tequila and simple syrup to taste. Top with a splash of fizzy soda water and, for the finishing touch, garnish with a lemon wheel, a vanilla bean and of course, a paper umbrella.

Bottoms up, folks.

5 Ways to Drink Tequila (Beyond the Margarita)

Here at Cooking Channel, we love us some tequila. Not just because this blue-agave-born liquor is the star of the margarita — arguably our favorite cocktail — but because the sweet, woodsy or smoky spirit (depending on distillery and age) adds its fire to pretty much any mixed drink. This National Tequila Day, salt your margarita glass rims for a different sort of sipper (it’s the Mexican vessel of choice for any tequila-based beverage).

5 Ways to Get Your Tequila On:

1. Follow Chuck’s lead and turn those lemons into a minty-fresh spiked lemonade (shown above).

2. Mix up a two-tone sangria with a pineapple-tequila base and a red wine topper.

This sangria's twice as nice (though you may not think so tomorrow)
