I first discovered the traditions surrounding Thanksgiving when I moved from France to the United States fifteen years ago. I had come to teach at an American university, and my friend Margaret invited me to spend Thanksgiving with her family. I still remember how cozy and warm the holiday felt to me; how the food – though different – was similar to some of the dishes my family ate while I was growing up.

I come from a rural area in Northeastern France where in these months, we grow plenty of winter squash (red kuri squash being a favorite), as well as apples, pears and root vegetables like celeriac and parsnips. Our cooking is filled with walnuts, chestnuts and mushrooms. To me, these foods are reminiscent of France in the fall.

Every year, it’s tradition that my husband, Scott deep-fries a turkey. Hello crispy skin! We’re big on veggies, too; you’re likely to see quite a few dishes on our Thanksgiving table. You really can’t go wrong with snappy green beans, shallots sautéed in nutty browned butter and toasted hazelnuts. Or maybe we could toss cauliflower florets with olive oil, bacon and garlic and roast for 20 minutes for a simple side dish.

When we hear the word “Thanksgiving,” a number of things come to mind: family, togetherness, feasts, just to name a few. For some people, the lucky ones, it also means stepping outside and indulging in beautiful colors that weren’t there during the summer months and which will soon disappear. These colors are easily found within typical Thanksgiving fare, so when we think about table decor, we like to offset that palette by adding in some light colors, like blues and greens. It’s a bit of an unexpected route to take your table decor, but it really makes the food look amazing because of the contrast it provides.

For as long as I can remember, Thanksgiving has been a huge family affair.  It is a day when all of our family comes together – all 50 of us.

Typically, my aunts spend all day cooking both Korean and traditional American Thanksgiving dishes.  It is a really wonderful way to acknowledge their Korean ancestry and their children’s American upbringing. However, this Thanksgiving we are doing things a little differently. This will be the first year I am hosting Thanksgiving dinner in our new home, which we moved into in September. It will also be the first Thanksgiving we celebrate without my father, who passed away suddenly a few days after Christmas last year.

At our Thanksgiving table there are many palates to please. Year after year the offerings rarely change and that’s how they like it. Boxed stuffing, congealed cranberry sauce with the ridges from the tin can still intact and corn soggy from a quick defrost in the microwave.

By my descriptions you may think I don’t enjoy our Thanksgiving, when in fact the opposite is true. While the food may not resemble the buffet of my dreams, it’s our tradition and it satisfies in a way that no other meal can. I know just what to expect and it never disappoints. And yet I feel it is almost my duty as a passionate food lover to push tradition a bit.

Years ago, through circumstances beyond our control, my partner and I missed out on having a Thanksgiving dinner. Plans had been made, then fallen through, and as we sat on my aging college-era futon, in my tiny 300-square-foot studio apartment in San Francisco, with all our friends gone for the holidays, we made a pact that from then on, Thanksgiving was to be our holiday. We would always host dinner regardless of where we were and who was available. We’ve kept that vow, hosting dinner every single year afterwards, whether it meant making a feast just for ourselves in that same tiny studio apartment (complete with all the fixings and sides) or hosting a double back-to-back feast (Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving) feeding 20+ people both nights while staying at a friend’s condo in Los Angeles.
