The story behind The Fabulous Beekman Boys is touching and funny, and worth the time to learn. The stripped-down version is that a successful New York City couple, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge, take a trip upstate, happen upon a dormant but beautiful 19th century farmhouse for sale, and decide to use it as a weekend getaway to make goats’ milk soap as a hobby. They both get laid off, so they have to figure out how to use the farm to make a living (an undergoing that involves raising tons of goats, fixing up a 210-year-old house, launching a brand and trying not to let their long-term relationship buckle under the pressure.) The rest of the story unfolds when The Fabulous Beekman Boys premieres Thursday, September 20, at 10pm ET on Cooking Channel.

Heirloom recipes have a value that not even the world’s top chefs’ greatest dishes can surmount. That’s because beyond the ingredients that make up the particular flavors and textures of the meal is a mix of history and culture that make up the narrative of the food.

The teams for the new season of The Amazing Race have been announced and it turns out two of the 22 around-the-world racers are Cooking Channel’s own Fabulous Beekman Boys, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge. Given their background, we think they have a pretty good shot at the million dollar prize. Learning to run a 200-year-old farm, raise a herd of goats, launch a lifestyle business and maintain a healthy relationship is probably as good of a prep for an intense global competition than anything.
Find out what Josh and Brent are made of when the Fabulous Beekman Boys premieres on Cooking Channel on Thursday, September 20th at 10pm ET.
Meet Josh Kilmer-Purcel and Brent Ridge, better known as The Fabulous Beekman Boys. Josh is a New York Times best-selling author and former drag queen. Brent is a doctor and former VP at Martha Stewart Living. One day these two city boys saw a beautiful 19th-century farmhouse for sale in upstate New York. For some reason, they decided it would be a fun project to fix it up and start making organic soap out of goat milk. Well it turns out learning how to farm and maintain a 210-year-old property and run a business and raise a bunch of animals and commute from Manhattan every week—all while trying to maintain a relationship—can be pretty stressful. On the plus side, the ensuing drama is really fun to watch. You can find out if they pull it off this September when The Fabulous Beekman Boys comes to Cooking Channel. If you don’t have Cooking Channel already, you can check if it’s offered in your area here. You can also get a taste of The Beekman Boys’ rural life right now on Netflix.
