Thirsty Thursday: Easy Rum Cocktails for Labor Day Weekend

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

Weekends are important, especially the sun-dappled, backyard barbecue kinds of weekends that characterize summer. While Labor Day is the symbolic end of summer, (after this, school starts, the weather cools down and berry picking gives way to apple picking) take this extra-long weekend to relax in the warm weather with rum-filled, late-summer sippers.

We’re thinking of rum-y cocktails that pair well with sweet and sticky ribs, kabobs, grilled burgers and seasonal produce. From minty mojitos to dynamic daiquiris, rum is our spirit of choice when it comes to showcasing some refreshing flavors.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Valentine’s Day Dessert + Booze

This Valentine’s Day, I’m falling in love all over again with my two favorite ingredients: alcohol and chocolate. Since Thirsty Thursday also happens to be Valentine’s Day, I’m boozing up a chocolatey dessert as well as my after-dinner drink.

Champagne is a must on Valentine’s Day, so I’m starting off the romance with Remixed Champagne Kirs. Fresh raspberries are marinated in vodka, sugar, Thai chiles, peppercorns and a vanilla bean. Once the flavors are infused, each champagne flute gets three plump, sweet-and-spicy raspberries before being topped with chilled champagne.

Now don’t get me wrong; simple chocolate-dipped strawberries are great and all, but nothing says Valentine’s Day like boozed-up, deep chocolate cakes. These dainty little heart-shaped morsels are perfumed with rum, filled with a light raspberry cream and glazed in a rich, pourable chocolate ganache. Enhance the presentation with edible rose buds and a blackberry coulis made with crème de cassis. These Valentine’s Day cakes are chocolatey, sophisticated and alcohol-infused.

And did I mention chocolate is an aphrodisiac? You’re welcome.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: The Hemingway Daiquiri

The Hemingway Daiquiri

Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Ernest Hemingway traveled long and far in his lifetime, but only one destination drastically altered the writer’s drinking habits. Long story short, Cuba and its rum-soaked daiquiris will always hold a place in Hemingway’s liver. On a particularly parched evening, he is even reputed to have thrown back a whopping 16 of them.

It’s National Daiquiri Day, and there’s only one way to celebrate: with a Hemingway Daiquiri. Made with white rum, fresh grapefruit juice, maraschino liqueur and lime, pouring a few glasses of this refreshing favorite is only fitting. Raise a toast to the classic Caribbean cocktail with this tasty variation, mixed up by Marshall Altier of New York City’s JBird Cocktails.

Bottoms up, folks.

Celebrate the end of a long day, beginning of a great weekend and start of something new — your imminent addiction to this French Margarita. This Saturday is French National Day — otherwise known as Bastille Day, the perfect time to meet one of our favorite fancied-up summer drinks. If you relish in the occasional tequila-based cocktail, wait ’til you taste what Grand Marnier and Chambord bring to the party.

How to Make Sangria in 3 Easy Steps

How to Make Sangria

Summer, to us, means laid-back patio drinks, and the king of those is sangria. Sangria is as easy to make as it is to drink; as long as you’ve got wine, fruit, and some kind of spirits, you’re good to go.

In fact, you’re just three steps away from having sangria:

Step 1: Wine.

Pretty much any wine makes a good sangria, though generally you’re best off going with medium-to-light on the mouthfeel front (a super-buttery Chardonnay or inky black Zinfandel are trickier to balance with fruit). Each bottle of wine makes about 6 glasses of sangria.

There will be beer — liquor, too — but when toasting to the 4th of July this year, try sipping on something a bit more celebratory. After all, this is a special year: the Olympics are just around the corner and the 4th falls on a Wednesday, which, naturally, means not one, but two weekends-worth of outdoor festivities. Celebrate in style with summer berries, sparkling wine and a new take on sangria.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: Cool Down with a Piña Colada

A blistering heat wave has come screaming across the country, which begs the question: has there ever been a better time to sip on a Piña Colada? Light and dark rum star in this wildly refreshing frozen cocktail, blended with classic coconut cream and pineapple juice, along with frozen pineapple pieces for good measure. Bring the beach to your backyard and cool down with a tropical treat this Thursday (or Friday, or Saturday, or Sunday), because, let’s face it, it’s too hot not to.

Bottoms up, folks.

Thirsty Thursday: You Drank My Battleship

Battleship Drinking Game

Battleship Bar Game, by Mauricio (Tony) Harion

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too. A hard thing to disagree with, we know. Drink up, get down and go to sleep happy.

With Peter Berg’s new movie Battleship hitting the box office this weekend, it’s only natural to harbor a bit of nostalgia. If your childhood was anything like mine, you likely spent hours deliberating over imaginary missiles, simultaneously guessing the location of their respective targets. But while talk of the new Battleship movie has many longing for the old, faithful board game, it’s also inspired a new, alcoholic appropriation. Never mind my battleship(s), you just sunk my liver!

Thirsty Thursday: The Drunken Donuts Cocktail

Drunken Donuts Cocktail

It’s more than just alliteration; it’s a statement, a proclamation that Thursdays are when the weekend should really start. Kicking it off right is the key, and what better way than with a cocktail that not only takes the edge off, but tastes good too.

Last week we shared a recipe for our Silk Sheets Cocktail; this week we’re back with something even edgier.

All this nippy weather has us pining for warmer days, too, but rather than resent the heavy sweaters and itchy scarfs, embrace the cold by coddling a drink that truly embodies the season. With espresso vodka and coffee liqueur, Alie and Georgia’s Drunken Donuts Cocktail isn’t only exactly what you’ll want, it’s exactly the sort of concoction you’ll need this time of year. Sweet, boozy and supped up with a donut for garnish, don’t be surprised if you find yourself reaching for a few more round guys to dunk in. Bottoms up, folks.
